When I was a child my grandfather made a chess set and board by hand using plaster and wood. I was with the unity of actual craftsmanship and potential mental exhaustion this board represented. My interest in pursuits which require an aggressive agility of the mind began with the chess set but was cemented when my friend Jason introduced me to a game called Warmachine in 2006. Produced by
Privateer Press I initially was only drawn to the game as a hobby. I had grown up drawing and painting so the idea of painting miniature sculptures was tantalizing. After Jason bought me a box of
Khador, free is the greatest incentive to have someone take anything, I began not only painting the models but enjoying the stories all the people at Privateer Press were creating in their
mythopoeia. As someone who is a fan of the game I wanted to create my own stories within this world as a form of self expression. This is not for the desire to generate profits or to hijack another intellectual property (IP). This is merely a labor of love and is no way officially connected to the Privateer Press canon.
The story you are about to read is based on a character code named "Manfred" and within his story I hope to capture the modern feelings of displacement, loss, alienation, and triumph though small those triumphs will be. His story is fantasy and as fantasy represents a real challenge because how can a writer hope to make relevant that which has never been? I hope by the end of it we can learn from Manfred but know ourselves a little better and maybe even weep for him.
